Most job seekers are still playing by old rules while the game has completely changed. Paper resumes are not enough when hiring happens online and the first screening is done by algorithms. Tamara Cameron knows this better than most. She has spent more than twenty years as VP of Professional Services at iCareerSolutions, working as a reverse recruiter for C-suite leaders who need to navigate these new digital hurdles.

When Your Resume Needs to Work Like a Website

She asks executives a simple question that usually stops them cold: “If your resume were a website, would anyone click through?” Most people never think about their resume that way, but they should. The hiring world has moved online, and many professionals have been left behind. Here is what Cameron sees happening: “In 2025, paper is out and presence is everything.” Companies no longer just read your resume. They Google you. They check your LinkedIn. They run your application through software that decides whether you are worth a human’s time. Your resume needs to work everywhere, not just on someone’s desk.

Think Like A Digital Brand, Not Just A Job Seeker

The biggest mistake professionals make is thinking their resume is just a list of jobs. Cameron pushes her clients to think bigger. “A digital-first resume isn’t just a document, it’s your career brand in motion,” she explains. That means everything needs to connect, from your LinkedIn profile to what shows up when someone searches your name. The reality hits hard for executives who thought their experience would speak for itself. “Hiring managers Google you, ATS bots scan for keywords. If your resume doesn’t translate across platforms such as LinkedIn, it’s already behind,” she points out. She tells clients to stop thinking about job titles and start building stories. The resume needs keywords that computers understand, but it also needs to make sense when humans read it.

Optimize For AI And Humans

Here’s the part that frustrates most job seekers. She has watched qualified people get rejected before any human ever sees their application. “Most resumes never reach a recruiter’s eyes. Why? Poor formatting, missing keywords, no strategy,” she explains. The software screening systems are picky, and most people don’t know how to work with them. Cameron’s solution involves making resumes that work on two levels. They need to get past the computer screening while still impressing the person who eventually reads them. She describes her approach as creating documents that are “ATS-friendly, data-optimized, and still connect with the human on the other side.” When she gets this balance right, her clients see their interview rates jump. Some see increases of up to 50% just from fixing how their resume works with technology.

Make It Personal, But Marketable

Senior executives often think their long track record automatically impresses people. That is no longer the case. Cameron works to break this mindset with most of her clients. “Your story matters, but it needs structure,” she tells them. Experience does not sell itself. It has to be packaged the right way. The work goes far beyond writing stronger job descriptions. “I help professionals showcase leadership impact, quantify results, and align their messaging with their target roles,” she explains. That means making executives think hard about what actually matters for the job they want. Most try to include everything they have ever done. Cameron insists on relevance over completeness. “This is not about listing everything you have done. It is about presenting why it matters in today’s digital hiring ecosystem,” she notes. The best resumes tell a focused story, not a complete history.

Her final advice often hits executives where it hurts. “If your resume still feels outdated in a TikTok world, it is time to upgrade. Start thinking as a brand, show up as a leader, and let your digital-first resume open the doors your talent deserves.”

The job market is not going back to the old way of doing things. Executives who want to stay competitive need to understand both the technology and the psychology behind modern recruitment. Cameron’s approach gives them both.
