Harry Karidis: Building Persuasive Campaigns With Cultural Research and Technology

Technology has no persuasive power of its own. It is an amplifier, and an amplifier multiplies whatever it is given, which is why so many campaigns built around the latest AI or immersive media land loud and flat. Campaign strategist Harry Karidis has spent 36 years watching that happen.

As a director, producer, and consultant who has built international campaigns for major brands and networks, he sees the industry starting from the wrong end. “The most persuasive campaigns are built on cultural insight first, technology second,” he says. Feed the amplifier a cultural truth, and it amplifies persuasion. Feed it a campaign built around the tech itself, with no real insight underneath, and it amplifies nothing but volume.

Cultural Research Is the Signal Worth Amplifying

Every campaign that moves people starts with understanding what an audience actually cares about, Karidis says, not what a brand assumes or what a spreadsheet reports. That understanding is the foundation, and it has to exist before any technology enters the picture. The distinction he draws is between demographics and narrative. Real cultural research is not about the categories an audience falls into but about the stories they are already telling themselves, their values, anxieties, and aspirations, and what they are already responding to.

“When you understand that narrative, your messaging feels authentic, inevitable rather than imposed,” Karidis says. This is what makes a campaign persuasive, and it exists independent of any technology used to carry it. Without it, there is nothing for the technology to amplify.

Technology Multiplies Culture, It Does Not Replace It

AI, interactive experiences, and immersive media are powerful tools, but they work only when they serve a cultural truth. Too many campaigns begin with the most impressive available technology and then force a message to fit it, reversing the only order that works.

The failure is structural, not a matter of poor execution. Technology amplifies what culture creates, so a campaign built around the tech with no insight underneath is amplifying emptiness, producing something louder and flashier that audiences still ignore. The flashy campaign that falls flat did not fail on its production values. It failed because it amplified a signal that was never there. Find the insight first, Karidis advises, then choose the technology that brings it to life.

Integration Is What Makes It Stick

The final principle is that the two pieces are worth more together than either is alone. Cultural insight without reach stays small, and technology without insight stays hollow. Combining strategic cultural research with smart technology across every touchpoint is what produces consistency, credibility, and persuasion that lasts.

The consistency is the point. When a single cultural truth runs through every touchpoint and is amplified by the right technology, an audience encounters the same authentic message everywhere, which is what builds credibility over time. The campaigns that move markets, Karidis says, are not the loudest. They are the ones that understand their audience, speak to what matters, and then use technology to carry that understanding further than it could travel on its own.
