There was perhaps no bigger surprise when Meta released an energized action-packed video featuring John Cena, a former WWE superstar and actor in September 2024. This ad is part of Meta’s renewed partnership with Ray-Ban for the promotion of their latest AI smart glasses. The video, which has garnered hundreds of millions of views, showcases a series of cool and thrilling actions in which Cena and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg are shown wearing the new smart glasses and performing various activities ranging from sword fighting to flying through the air.

The highlight of this collaboration is Meta’s encouragement to integrate cutting-edge technology into daily life, which positions smart glasses as more than just a trendy eyewear but also as a functional accessory that could uplift users’ experiences and make communication easier.

The Action-Packed Promotion

The advertisement, which was captured with the participants using Ray-Ban smart glasses, is a display of the synthesis of technology and entertainment. Zuckerberg is shown squaring off to John Cena in an exciting bout and all the scenes were shot through the lenses of the two men’s smart glasses. Other personalities that feature in the ad include singer Benson Boone and filmmaker Matthew Vaughn, making it a perfect advertisement that showcases Meta’s technology capabilities.

The glasses offer a hands-free, first-person point-of-view recording, enabling users to capture their lives and experiences in real-time without the need for conventional cameras or mobile phones.

The decision to collaborate with a recognizable personality like John Cena is a well thought-out strategy. Cena’s popularity worldwide, established during his career in WWE, acting, and charity efforts, makes him the perfect figure to spread information about the new smart glasses. This partnership is also part of Meta’s strategy to rebrand the smart glasses as more than just a gadget, but as a mainstream product for anyone interested in innovation and improved user experience.

The Evolution of Smart Glasses

Meta has been collaborating with Ray-Ban since 2021 during the first launch of the Ray-Ban Stories smart glasses. These initial versions enable users to take pictures, shoot videos, listen to music and answer calls hands-free. However, while the first iteration of the product was a step forward in fusing fashion with functionality, it did not have a major market impact.

Now in 2024, Meta is back in the smart glasses space with an updated model and a new concept. The new generation of smart glasses seeks to provide users with a better experience in terms of advanced augmented reality features. Unlike the former versions, the new glasses are expected to project digital information on the real world, much like the heads-up displays used in military and aviation equipment. This will allow the users to interact with their environment in different ways, such as receiving notifications, getting directions or even playing AR games, all without having to take a look at a mobile screen.

Augmented Reality: The Next Big Thing?

Zuckerberg has long been an active advocate of augmented and virtual reality technologies, and he sees them as the next generation of communication and interaction. His vision for the metaverse, a completely virtual world in which people can work, play and interact, rests on the development of AR and VR technologies. Meta’s Oculus virtual reality headsets have been a leap in this direction, but the firm’s smart glasses are considered to be a key link between the physical and virtual worlds.

The collaboration with Cena not only informs users about Meta’s smart glasses but also about the company’s further evolution in the field of augmented reality. Zuckerberg’s expectation is that in the future, smart glasses will eventually supplant smartphones as the primary means for people’s interaction with digital content. Rather than having to look down at a screen, users will be able to see notifications, use applications and even converse with other people through holographic-like interfaces directly in front of them.

Through infusing cutting-edge technology with entertainment, Meta has positioned its smart glasses as the next big thing in personal technology. While there might be challenges, the intent for the partnership and the potential of AR technology mean that Meta’s smart glasses could be a dominant force in shaping how we interact with the world around us.
